It is my pleasure to welcome you to The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, a part of the UT System. UTPB is dedicated to students and their academic success. Two national publications, U.S. News & World Report and Washington Monthly, have applauded us. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recognized us for being the first public university in the state to implement AVID strategies at the post-secondary level. U.S. News and World Report have ranked us as a Top Tier University for the past four years.
UTPB values it partnerships with Texas schools. We offer Texas’ first Early College High School that serves remote districts using a blended online and in person arrangement. UTPB is proud to have Presidio, Rankin, Marfa and Balmorhea as ECHS partners. UTPB also offers online dual credit courses to schools throughout Texas. In Fall 2013, UTPB registered over 1,100 highly qualified Texas high school juniors and seniors. They earned both college and high school credit, saving their families hundreds of dollars on each course and speeding the student toward both their high school and college graduations.
Our College of Business and Engineering is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)-International. Our social work program is nationally accredited by the Council of Social Work Education and the College of Education is NCATE accredited and nationally recognized. Our art program is also nationally accredited. We offer degrees in some of the fastest growing career fields such as mechanical and petroleum engineering, education, criminal justice, computer science, petroleum technology, information systems, and Nursing. We also offer eight online undergraduate and graduate degrees; each of these is offered in an eight week format so students can do the work on their schedule and make the fastest progress possible toward their degrees. The new B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, with or without a concentration in nuclear engineering, is accredited by ABET. We have graduated our first classes Petroleum Engineering students, and the program is growing rapidly. Our Nursing program opened in Fall 2013, and slots are filling rapidly for the next class of nursing students. In Fall 2014, Registered Nurses may come to UTPB either face-to-face RN to BSN or online RN to BSN and earn the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
UT Permian Basin is a dynamic, growing campus with over 5,000 students. The Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center was ranked as one of the top centers in the world and #1 in Texas for university-based centers in 2013. In the fall of 2011, a science complex with state-of-the-art computer and science labs opened, forming a quadrangle with the original classroom building and library lecture center. There is also a model Charles A. Sorber Visual Arts Studio with gallery next door to an Olympic-sized pool and gymnasium. Our brand new Student Activities Center is up and operating, offering Starbuck’s coffee and really good food. For students who are also parents, UTPB does offer child-care services.
Since the Permian Basin boasts sunny skies most of the year, UTPB is the perfect place to study on the courtyard or lawn or watch a Falcon soccer match. NCAA D-II sports include men’s and women’s soccer, cross country, swimming, basketball, and tennis as well as men’s baseball and women’s softball and volleyball. In 2008-2009, both the volleyball and baseball teams won the Heartland Conference championships, and in 2011 and 2012, the women’s basketball team won the conference. The athletic program also supports cheerleading and a dance team. We are considering the feasibility of adding football for Fall 2016. Go Falcons!
Whether you arrange for a personal tour or attend one of our Falcon Days, you’ll see some of the nicest student housing in Texas. We offer a variety of apartment-style units. Plan to attend one of several theatrical productions or a musical performance, an art show, or an athletic event to see that this is a great place to be. UTPB has an active Student Activities program, and intramural sports are available.
I want you to have the very best college experience possible. UT Permian Basin faculty and staff are dedicated to help you succeed. Come join us!
