January 19, 2017, Labor Market and Career Information, 12:30-1:30 p.m., UTPB Multipurpose room. Speaker: Mick Normington, Business Specialist, Texas Workforce Commission. Come join us and find out the latest in Texas employment data and find out what specific skills Texas employers are looking for, the top industries by Texas counties, average Texas wages in skilled labor occupations, Texas counties with the highest growth rates, key trends in employment data and the impact of retiring Baby Boomers in Texas. A free meal will be provided from 12:00 noon to 12:30 p.m. Mick Normington is a Business Specialist with the Texas Workforce Commission’s Labor Market and Career Information division. Mick holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri and dual Master’s degrees in business administration and economic development from the University of Georgia and the University of Southern Mississippi. He co-authored the book “Working Texas Style” about the fast changing labor economy in Texas after the Great Recession. He later wrote the book “An Atmosphere of Enterprise” about job creation trends in Texas. Mick also recently completed his term as board president of the Writers’ League of Texas, which is a non-profit organization that promotes literacy and guides writers about their adventures in living in Texas.

Discussion will include the “one minute elevator speech”, behavioral interviews questions, researching companies, appropriate dress and follow up questions. A free lunch will be served and door prizes will be awarded.
February 2, 2017, Careers in Healthcare, 12:30-1:30 p.m., UTPB Multipurpose room. Speaker: Susie Dominguez, Coordinator, Area Health Education Center. Come learn which occupational pathways are available within the healthcare field, along with educational requirements, salaries and local demands. AHEC’s “Hot Jobs” handbooks will be distributed along with information about local scholarships and sponsorships. A free lunch will be provided.

Learn how to assimilate in foreign countries, labor contracts, the U.S. travel advisory service, taxation consequences and other facts. This fun seminar will help teach you how to create a “bottom-line” oriented resume using action verbs and quantitative statements. Cover letters, thank you letters and functional resumes will also be discussed. A free lunch will be provided and door prizes will be awarded.
March 23, 2017, Microsoft Excel for Beginners, 12:30-1:30 p.m. UTPB Science & Technology building room ST1108. Moderator: Tony Love. Come learn how to create a basic spreadsheet. This hands on and interactive workshop will teach students how to insert and delete rows and columns, format cells, create formulas, sort data, freeze panes, hide columns, and much more! Students will participate in hands on exercises that will improve their Excel proficiency. No lunch will be provided, however; door prizes will be awarded.
March 30, 2017, UTPB Spring Job Fair, 12:00-4:00 p.m., UTPB gym. Bring plenty of resumes and dress for success as we expect over 60 employers for the biggest job fair in Odessa!!! Many of the companies will have internships, summer jobs and entry level professional jobs for graduates. Be sure to stop by the UTPB Career Center (MB 2100) for a resume critique. Former UTPB adjunct professor Robert Segura will discuss in detail: you, your career, your communication, email etiquette, your relationship with your co-workers and your relationship with your boss. Come learn about application and testing requirements to get accepted into grad school along with other decisions that must be considered when choosing post-grad education. Free lunch door prizes.
April 27, 2017, Internships: Are They Right for You? 12:30-1:30 p.m., UTPB Multipurpose room. Moderator: Tony Love, UTPB Career Center. Come learn how to secure a paid internship. Discussion will revolve around how to approach your internship, the FLSA six part test that an employer must meet in order to host an unpaid intern and where to look for internships. Also, several companies will be on hand to discuss their internship programs. A free lunch will be served and door prizes awarded.
