The mission of the Retention Office is to promote and maintain successful academic progress of all students by providing academic counseling and assistance and to serve as an adviser to students facing academic issues. The office is headed by Ms. Vickie Gomez, who can be reached at gomez_v@utpb.edu or via telephone at 432-552-3601. Ms. Gomez is located in MB 4269A and can be reached Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

The Retention Office administers two key programs to help students. The first is academic probation. A student is placed on academic probation when his or her cumulative gpa falls below a 2.0.Working with the Dean of Undergraduate Success, the goal of the Retention Office during academic probation is to give the student the skills and discipline needed to succeed in his or her courses. This will typically involved monthly meetings with Ms. Gomez, study skills sessions, and other similar steps. It is extremely important to keep your meetings with the retention officer while on probation.

The second program administered by the Retention Office is Early Alert. This is a tool faculty and staff can use to alert us to any problems a student may be having in courses. Remember, though, that you don't need to wait for a problem to reach out to the retention officer for assistance. We are here to help!
