Addiction is the process of becoming physiologically dependent on an activity or substance. It typically starts with a mild habit that is used to reach a state of euphoria and quickly spirals into addiction. The diagram below shows the process of addiction.
Phase I: Substance use leads to euphoria.
Phase II: Substance use does not lead to the same level of euphoria. As a consequence, most of the time you feel lower than normal.
Phase III: Substance use leads to feeling slightly better than normal. Most of the time you feel depressed.
Phase IV: Substance use leads to feeling normal. Most of the time you feel very depressed.
