 Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyon State Parks

Only three hours north of campus are spectacular exposures of Permian and Triassic redbeds.

Caprock Canyon State Park - Permian and Triassic Red Beds

Caprock Canyon State Park exposes vast areas of Permian and Triassic redbeds along the Little Red River.

Many of the Permian beds are cut by gypsum veins.

 

Cross Bedding found along the road between Palo Dura and Caprock Canyon 
Beautiful examples of cross bedding occur along the road from Caprock 
Canyon to Palo Duro Canyon.

Capital Peak in Palo Dura Canyon

Permian and Triassic strata exposed near Capitol Peak in Palo Duro Canyon state Park.

The red and white strata in the foreground beneath the hoodoo are in the Quartermaster formation (Late Permian).

The mauve, yellow and brown strata in the background are in the Tecovas formation (Late Triassic).
