Admission Requirements
Requirements for admission to graduate study in Education include:
- Submission of a completed application form and official transcripts
- Verification of completion of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- Satisfactory scores on the TASP (certification candidates only)
- Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
- B average or better in junior and senior level courses and in any graduate work already completed, or other evidence of ability to succeed in graduate study
- Adequate subject preparation for the proposed field of study. Required leveling courses, if any, do not count toward the graduate program.
- Acceptance by the School of Education graduate acceptance committee.
Program Requirements
The MA in Education requires a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate work following a prescribed course of study in one of the available program options. This course of study includes:
- 9 core hours selected from EDUC 6301, 6302, 6303, 6304, and 6305
- 18 hours (minimum) in the chosen option
- 3 or more additional hours, depending on the option chosen
- 3-6 hours in a culminating master's experience
Four options for the culminating master's experience are available, depending on the student's program of study. Students selecting EDUC 6397, EDUC 6398, or EDUC 6399 pursue a problem in education of special interest to the student which is derived from his/her program of study. Students choosing the EDUC 6395 option must complete a "capstone" seminar during the last semester of course work.
At least one-half of the course work must be taken in the major area of study or in areas directly related to it. Specific requirements for each graduate program should be obtained from the respective program coordinators.
Certification Requirements
Students seeking advanced professional certification must meet the following requirements:
- Bachelor's degree (most require a Master's degree)
- Valid Texas teaching certificate
- Two to three years of creditable PK-12 teaching experience
- Completion of at least 30 semester hours of graduate-level courses beyond the bachelor's degree in an approved teacher education program, including 12 semester hours in the area(s) of specialization to appear on the certificate
- A passing score on the appropriate TExES exam(s)
- Recommendation of the faculty in Education to the Certification Officer, and
- Submission of an application with appropriate fee to the State Board for Educator Certification.
