Periodical is a general term which includes journals, magazines, numbered monographic series, annuals, e-serials, e-journals, e-zines, and so on. Individual databases may be indexes, abstracting or full-text services.

American Periodical Series, 1740-1900	ProQuest	In order to access this database from the main ProQuest page you must select Interdisciplinary APS Online from the databases collection drop down menu. Alternatively, you may click here for direct access. The database provides access to more than 1,100 journal titles (more than 7 million pages) published from 1740-1900. Titles range from America's first scientific journal, Medical Repository, to popular magazines like Vanity Fair and Ladies' Home Journal. 89 journals are from the period 1740-1800; 900+ cover the pre-civil war period; 118 publications were active during the Civil War and Reconstruction period (1861-1877). A few titles extend past the 1900 cut-off date: titles like Forum (later Forum and Century) which was published from 1886-1940, and Littell's Living Age (later Living Age) published from 1844-1941.

CLASE and Periodica	Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM)	FS; CLASE indexes documents published in Latin American journals specializing in the social sciences and the humanities; Periodica covers journals specializing in science and technology. This index focuses on the humanities and social sciences, with subject coverage ranging from economics, political science, and history to criticism of literary works, drama, and film. The online index covers 1985 to the present, while the library owns the paper indexes back to 1933.

HarpWeek, 1857-1912	Harpers Weekly	HarpWeek is the full-text and full-image reproductions of Harpers Weekly. There is a searchable database which offers several different ways to access the material. The database introduction and help pages are excellent. The vendor also provides Finding Aids for some of the most common areas of interest--e.g. Geography, Literary Genre, Occupation or Role in Society and so on. The size of Harper's Weekly pages (11" x15.5") does not allow the use of Internet browser printing functions [only the left side of the page will be printed]. Instead either click the "Printable Version" option while browsing, or for other printing and saving options go to the Help pages offered by the vendor.

MEDLINE	National Library of Medicine	FS; Indexes medical and nursing journals 1965-present; indexed journals are often at the professional medical level. This database should not be confused with the one below.
MedlinePLUS: Health Information	National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health	MedlinePlus is a specialized subset of MEDLINE, which focuses on consumer health information. This database provides consumer health information about drugs and supplements, a medical encyclopedia, a dictionary, and other information culled from US government publications.

Open Access Electronic Journals Directory of Open Access Journals e-journals.org HighWire Press	Dunagan Library	There are three primary lists or directories that link to many academic (but some non-academic) free electronic journals. These are Directory of Open Access Journals, e-journals.org, and HighWire Press. HighWire Press links primarily to science materials.
PAIS: Public Affairs Information Service	Proquest/ CSA	In July of 2005 OCLC sold this database to Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, the interface and indexing methods are entirely new; the number of titles indexed has been reduced from more than 2,000 to just over 1,000.
PAO Full-Text Collection	Chadwyck Healey	PAO: Periodical Archives Online [formerly PCI] covers 37 key subject areas in the humanities and social sciences; it contains the contents of 400 journal runs, providing access to over 8 million article pages. It has digitized important scholarly titles but also includes journals of historical interest that began publication in the 19th century, for example, Edinburgh Review, which was first published in 1802.
Physical Education Index	ProQuest/ CSA	The Physical Education Index includes complete backfile indexing to 1970.
Project MUSE	Johns Hopkins University Press (JHUP)	This database contains the complete texts with all graphics, footnotes, and references of all JHUP journals. Beginning in 2001 additional titles from more than 70 prestigious scholarly and university presses have been added for a total of more than 300 high quality academic journals. The project focuses on humanities & social science titles, but also publishes journals dealing with the history of science.
Proquest Research Library	ProQuest/ CSA	General periodical index; contains citations and full-image materials for both academic [e.g. Ecology] and popular [e.g. Earthwatch] titles. Indexes more than 2000 titles. More than 900 journals in this edition of the database are full image (PDF) files which provide true full-text information (graphics, tables, and so on).
PsycARTICLES	APA	FS; an online database containing more than 42,500 searchable full-text articles from 49 peer reviewed journals published by the APA and allied organizations from 1988 to the present. Be aware that PsycArticles does not replace the indexing provided through PsycINFO_1887; this index provides indexing to all major psychological journals back to 1887.

SocINDEX with Full Text	Ebscohost	Sociology, Social Work and Criminology are the focus of this database. Covered in less depth and limited to journals with a social policy focus are titles in Political Science, Public Administration, Geography, and Economics. 816 journals identified and selected by the American Sociological Association are indexed cover-to-cover, another 630 journals are "priority" indexed. More than 500 of these journals are available in full text through this database. In addition, access is provided to nearly 7,000 full-text conference papers and more than 720 books.
SportDiscus with Full Text	EbscoHost/SIRC	The SPORTDiscus covers both serial and monographic literature in the following areas of sport: recreation, exercise physiology, sports medicine, coaching, physical fitness, the psychology, history and sociology of sport. 70% of the database consists of periodical articles.

The database introduction and help pages are excellent. The vendor also provides Finding Aids for some of the most common areas of interest--e.g. Geography, Literary Genre, Occupation or Role in Society and so on.

The size of Harper's Weekly pages (11" x15.5") does not allow the use of Internet browser printing functions [only the left side of the page will be printed]. TESO is a full-text database which contains the most important dramatic works of sixteenth and seventeenth century Spain. It contains more than 800 plays by 16 dramatists.
