| Researching a Topic (Electronic Databases, Fulltext Materials, and Selected Web Sites) |
From the library home page, you can find links to a wide array of web-based information. For example, an alphabetical list of all library journal databases including fulltext materials; library book databases, which include full-image books, reference materials, diaries, and so on; guides and links on how to use web-based search engines and subject directories; short lists by discipline of particularly useful databases and web sites .
In September 2005, a new method of accessing databases off-campus was adopted. Information and linking is provided here. Please report any problems to e-ref or call 432-552-2369.
Librarians can also provide passwords to various databases, for this service please call the Reference Desk at (432) 552-2396. You will be asked to provide your student UID number as proof of current enrollment at UTPB.
Finally, UT Telecampus provides various types of access to certain distance education students.

| Restricted Resources [ Links to Proxy Server Help Pages] |
Some resources have restricted access. Typically, on-line resources such as commercial abstract databases, knowledge bases for specific topics, full-text periodical services and similar resources have restricted access. These restrictions are used to insure that the provider of the information is appropriately reimbursed for access to the product and to insure that the resource is available for UTPB students. Restricted resources may utilize a variety of protection schemes to insure only authorized users achieve access. The most common access control schemes rely on Username/Password authentication or on a scheme called source IP address restriction. Resources which rely on source IP address restriction require some special consideration when being accessed through an ISP. In particular, you may be required to use the services of a device called a Proxy Server in order to access source IP-protected resources when using a connection provided through an ISP. This is not a requirement when using the UTPB dial-up connection scheme to access UTPB resources. You may be required to use Proxy Server services when accessing certain UT Telecampus resources regardless of your connection method.Select this link for additional information on the UTPB: Institutional Resources [IRD]:Student Services

TexShare:
Dunagan Library participates in a cooperative agreement called TexShare with a number of other Texas universities, community colleges, and public libraries. This program allows UTPB students, faculty, associates of the faculty, and staff to use other libraries in the State of Texas. Click here to request aTexShare Card.
Reference Resources:
Librarians are ready to answer reference questions from distance education students submitted by phone, mail, email, or fax. Please be as specific as possible with your questions. The Reference desk number is (432) 552-2374. The Access Services fax number is (432) 552-2395. Librarians can also provide passwords to various databases, for this service please call the Reference Desk. Librarians are available to assist distance education faculty with information needed to develop lists of readings and/or syllabi. Librarians may be contacted via e-mail or phone 432-552-2396. You may also opt to use the ready reference service E-REF. Bear in mind that this service is for very short factual, unambiguous questions only.
FYI: UTPB distance students should identify themselves and clearly state their information need. Some questions can be handled easily by the librarian on duty, while others will involve more time. Be sure to supply an email address, phone number, or another way to make contact. We will call you if we need to talk to you even if it is long distance.
Instruction on Library Resources:
Librarians provide faculty and students participating in distance education with the instruction needed to effectively utilize the library and information resources available. Faculty and students may attend scheduled sessions or arrange for an appointment. To arrange instruction sessions contact Bobbie Williams, Instruction Coordinator via email or phone 432-552-2407.For basic library orientation the most efficient instruction is provided by the completion of TILT: Texas Information Literacy Tutorial. This nationally recognized tutorial is comprised of three modules which take approximately 50 minutes each to complete. It provides an excellent basic orientation to modern research skills. On completion of each module the student should email their test results to Michele Kuchel at Libinstruct. If you have any questions about TILT you may contact Michele Kuchel, Head of Access Services or phone 432-552-2398.
Interlibrary Services:
Faculty and students involved in distance education classes are able to request materials through this service. Our new Millennium Catalogue system allows a direct link to the Interlibrary Loan Request Form.
The Document Delivery Service makes it possible to deliver (via US Mail or fax) some of the materials owned by the Dunagan Library. Typically we can provide distance education students with journal articles, shorter works or chapters from books. Documents longer than 20 pages will always be mailed; shorter documents may be faxed. In light of current copyright laws, the library reserves the right to determine which items may be made available through this service.
