UTPB Receives Grant for Goldsmith R.O.Z.

The Goldsmith oil field in Ector County will be the scene of a federally-funded research effort led by UTPB Center for Energy and Economic Diversification (CEED) Director Bob Trentham, geology professor Dr. Emily Stoudt, and local oil man Steve Melzer. They will be working on the grant with Advanced Resources International, a research firm; the University of Houston, and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. The critical industry partner is Legado Resources which will be supplying both reservoir and oil response data valued at $654,000 as an in-kind contribution. The Department of Energy is funding this project with $1,198,546.
There are four research objectives related to examining and describing the different properties and processes of the San Andres Residual Oil Zones (ROZ) and the Main Pay Zones (MPZ). The contribution of 1100 feet of ROZ and MPZ San Andres formation core taken in the Goldsmith Field provides an invaluable data base for Legado, the faculty, and their partners for using “next generation” CO2-EOR technologies to assist in optimizing the ROZ CO2 Flood at this Goldsmith Landreth Unit.
“The objectives of our R&D project, targeting “next generation” technologies at the residual oil zone, are to use detailed reservoir characterization, laboratory and bench-scale testing, full-scale reservoir modeling, and state-of-the-art diagnostics to help optimize the design of the CO2 flood in the ROZ at the Goldsmith (San Andres) oil field in the Permian Basin. The larger benefits of this project are that it would build a publicly-available scientific base of information on the nature of ROZs and provide optimum CO2 flooding designs for adding this new, highly promising oil resource. Access to this information would greatly accelerate the timely and efficient recovery of oil from the residual oil zones of the Permian Basin and other ROZ-rich basins of the U.S. It is estimated that there are over 10 billion barrels of tertiary recovery reserves that can be eventually produced in the Permian Basin from residual oil zones,” explained Dr. Trentham.
According to the proposal, “simulations will be performed using laboratory and field analyses and core descriptions. Development of profile logging techniques to optimize conformance in injection and production wells will be performed. New and innovative techniques for production profile logging, and using capillary tubes in production wells for fluid lift enhancement will be employed. Comparative analysis of the dedicated ROZ pilot and the co-mingled MPZ+ROZ project will be performed. Technology transfer events, including a one-day event on ROZ science and flooding in association with the CO2 Flooding Conference, will be conducted within the Permian Basin and other locales in the U.S.”
