The Permian Basin is a seventeen-county region of west Texas, midway between Dallas and El Paso. Positioned at the northern tip of the Chihuahuan Desert, the area enjoys a semi-arid climate with an annual average 15" of precipitation and comfortable temperatures (average high of 56 F in January, 95 F in July). Odessa and Midland, with a two-county population of 250,000, are the commerce centers of the Permian Basin. The area is a major center for oil and natural gas production, and is diversifying into other modes of commerce including telecommunication and transportation. Midland International Airport is conveniently positioned between the two cities, and is served by three major airlines. Permian Basin communities enjoy lively arts and entertainment activities while maintaining a relatively slow-paced small-town lifestyle.
