The operations of the nuclear facility will be run from the nuclear island in the center by trained nuclear personnel. The reactor is expected to run much like a traditional particle accelerator laboratory, carefully scheduling reactor operations to maximize the science and operating 24/7 for most of the year. This operational mode will be planned to maximize the valuable scientific research done at the facility.
Security for any nuclear facility is a concern, even a meltdown-proof facility such as the HT3R. Security begins at the security gate, 800 meters from the central "nuclear island" of the research facility. The entire area will be surrounded by a security fence with a security road for patrols. Extensive camera monitoring will record activity and alert security personnel to movement in and around the facility. Attempts to lure Chuck Norris to Andrews County with a trail of steak and terrorists for added security have so far proven unsuccessful.
