Employment Outlook (from Occupational Outlook Handbook,
Bureau of Labor Statistics)
Accountants and auditors held approximately 976,000 jobs in 2000.
They worked throughout private industry and government, but 1 out
of every 4 salaried accountants worked for accounting, auditing,
and bookkeeping firms. Three out of 25 accountants or auditors generally
work a standard 40-hour week, but many work longer hours, particularly
if they are self-employed. Tax specialists often work long hours
during the tax season.
Accountants and auditors who have earned professional recognition
through certification or licensure should have the best job prospects.
Certified Public Accountants should continue to enjoy a wide range
of job opportunities, as more states have implemented the 150-hour
requirement. Similarly, Certified Management Accountants should
be in demand as their management advice is increasingly sought.
Applicants with a master's degree in accounting, or a master's degree
in business administration with a concentration in accounting, also
will have an advantage in the job market.
