Ans: Sociology is the scientific study of human society. It emphasiszes the diversity of cultures and societies and factors that influence socical behavior within institutions, formal and informal organizations, and various social groups. This program is administered by the Department of Behavioral Science within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Why Study Sociology?
Ans: Today
we live in a world that is increasingly interconnected. The
process of globalization has brought people a lot closer to
one another. Although this interconnectedness is not really
new, it has become a lot more pronounced at the present time.
Sociology allows us to step outside ourselves and make
connections between our lives and environment with those of
other individuals in the same or different cultures.
Sociological analysis involves important life issues including
structural inequalities --social class, racism, sexism,
heterosexism, ageism, etc.-- socialization and social control,
social stratification, education and religion, the family and
sexuality, economic and political policies, and global
development. It furthere allows us to be involved in the field of Demography.

Ans: The sociciolgy program at UT Permian Basin is committed to the personal, analytical and professional development of its students. The faculty is committed to developing the student's sensitivity to the human and social conditions, coupled with an understanding and ability to participate constructively in the improvement of both.
This program is oriented toward preparing students to:
- Understand the structure and issues of contemporary society
- Understand social inequalities & social problems
- Discover that the individual both reacts to as well as creates the social world
- Use sociological concepts, insights, and methods in a systematic fashion
- Experience a discipline which has practical significance
- Continue graduate training in sociology
- Find employment in various social service fields
