ENTREPRENEURSHIP BOOTCAMP 2007

The Roden Center along with The UTPB SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) Team conducted an Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for area high school students from July 23 -27. The Bootcamp was co-sponsored by the Jan and Ted Roden Center for Entrepreneurship and the Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission. The 24 participants were housed on campus in the dorms for the true “college experience”.
The students participated in activities aimed at augmenting their skills in the following areas:
- Financial Literacy
- Thinking creatively
- Networking
- Entrepreneurial Characteristics
- Leadership
- Team Building
- Problem Solving
- Organizational Planning
- Ethics
- Communication
The key activity for the week was an internet-based business simulation.
The businesses were mock coffee shops, and the students were placed in teams for a week-long competition. Teams met for 2-3 hours daily to make decisions pertaining to their businesses and the simulation helped to reinforce the skills learned during the Bootcamp. The simulation included decisions on advertising, number of employees and wages, location, product selection and prices, hours of operation, organization of the business, and strategies to generate more revenue. Fiscal statistics were generated daily for each team and the culmination of the competition consisted of each team presenting a brief business plan to a panel of judges, Dean Jack Ladd, -----, and -----.The winning team members were awarded $75 gift cards. Dr. Leslie Toombs led the team of SIFE members that assisted the participants with the simulation.

Keynote Speaker, Jeff Stamp Creator of Baked Lays Potato Chips, led the students in Creativity Training where each person invented a new cereal.

In addition to the lectures and learning activities, the students also visited The Museum of the Southwest Planetarium, attended a Midland Rockhounds game, had a karaoke night and swim party, and took salsa dance lessons. |

Two participants in the Bootcamp Rigo Rosales, and Sheneqia Hawkins were awarded $2000.00 annual scholarships to UTPB, in addition; each student that participated was given a $500 scholarship to UTPB.

Special Thanks to all of the following who assisted and made the Bootcamp a great success:
- Dr. Leslie Toombs-Pinkie Roden Chair of Entrepreneurship, Professor of Management UTPB School of Business, and SIFE Faculty Advisor. Dr. Toombs coordinated, scheduled, and conducted the week's activities.
- Jack Ladd-Dean of the UTPB School of Business. Dean Ladd delivered the welcome speech and was a guest judge for the simulated business competition.
- Tommy Baker-Director of the Small Business Development Center . Mr.
Baker was a guest judge for the simulated business competition.
- Kurt Verlai- Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship UTPB School of Business, Founder of Media Concepts, and Co-Host of “The Morning Drive” on KCRS AM 550. Mr. Verlai was a guest judge for the simulated business competition.
- Dr. Chad Greenfield-Assistant Professor of Accountancy, UTPB School of Business. Dr. Greenfield presented a lecture and training pertaining to Cash vs. Accrual Accounting.
- Dr. Wayne Counts-Assistant Professor of Accountancy, UTPB School of Business. Dr. Counts provided training on Break Even Analysis.
- Dr. Jeff Stamp-Assistant Professor and Chair of Entrepreneurship and Innovation University of North Dakota . Dr. Stamp was the keynote speaker for the Bootcamp and led the students in Creativity training.
- Jeana Pool- Ms. Pool is the President of CATALYST Creative, Inc. An award-winning graphic design web design and marketing firm in Denver , Colorado . Ms. Pool gave a presentation pertaining to Marketing Strategies.
- Tony Love- Director Career Services Center . Mr. Love led a computer based aptitude test and career planning program for the students.
- Dr. David Watts-President UTPB. Dr. Watts gave each participant in the Bootcamp a $500 spur scholarship and two students $2,000 annual scholarships.
- Dr. J. Tillapaugh- Assistant Vice President UTPB. Dr. Tillapaugh assisted with securing the grant for the Bootcamp.
- Imelda Moya- President UTPB SIFE. Ms. Moya presented Financial Literacy training and Team Building .
- Jesús Aguirre- Vice President UTPB SIFE. Mr. Aguirre presented Ethics Training.
- Linda Armendáriz- Secretary UTPB SIFE. Ms. Armendáriz presented Financial literacy training and Team Building .
- Beatriz Merino-Treasurer UTPB SIFE. Ms. Merino presented Ethics training and led the students in Salsa Dance Lessons.
- Erica Juarez-Representative UTPB SIFE. Ms. Juarez led the Ice Breaker activity and chronicled the week's events and activities through video and photographs.
- Andy Chapa- Representative UTPB SIFE. Mr. Chapa provided music during the pool party and assisted with the week's activities.
- Yesenia Sandoval- Ms. Sandoval presented Financial Literacy Training.
- Matt Flores- UTPB Recruiting Office. Mr. Flores led the students on a scavenger hunt on the UTPB campus.
- Manny Valerio led the Salsa Dance lesson.
