The Permian Basin is a seventeen-county
region of west Texas, midway between Dallas
and El Paso. Positioned at the northern tip
of the Chihuahuan Desert, the area enjoys a
semi-arid climate with an annual average 15"
of precipitation and comfortable temperatures
(average high of 56 F in January, 95 F in July).
Odessa and Midland, with a two-county population
of 250,000, are the commerce centers of the
Permian Basin. The area is a major center for
oil and natural gas production, and is diversifying
into other modes of commerce including telecommunication
and transportation. Midland International Airport
is conveniently positioned between the two cities,
and is served by three major airlines. Permian
Basin communities enjoy lively arts and entertainment
activities while maintaining a relatively slow-paced
small-town lifestyle.
