Description of Covered Services
General – Covered services encompass those services normally rendered in the context of family medicine in the office. For students requiring special assistance, the care of a specialty physician, “in-patient” services (hospitalization), advanced diagnostic services, or other services not covered by this plan, our staff will arrange a referral if they wish. However, this plan does not cover the costs of those services and the student will be responsible for those costs.
Plan Operation
The plan is designed to provide for the student’s basic primary healthcare needs in an outpatient setting. The health care providers listed above will provide medical services to eligible UTPB students at their offices. Medical services will be provided as deemed medically necessary by the treating physician. The costs of services provided under the plan are covered by the student health service fee paid at registration and an $8.00 co-payment at each clinic visit.
IN-PATIENT SERVICES, SERVICES PROVIDED BY A SPECIALIST AND SERVICES PROVIDED AT ANY FACILITY OTHER THAN THOSE LISTED ARE EXCLUDED FROM THIS PLAN AND ARE NOT COVERED SERVICES.
Utilization Procedure and Policies
- Visit any of the clinics listed above. Call in advance to schedule an appointment to help minimize your waiting time.
- Present your UTPB Student ID card and another form of picture identification.
- The clinic personnel will verify your eligibility.
- Pay the eight-dollar ($8.00) co-pay amount at the time of the visit.
- If you have health insurance, it is not necessary to use it for services covered by this plan. Of course, it may be used for services not covered by this plan.
- Plan coverage will extend for the first day of classes of the semester for which the fee is paid up to the first day of classes of the following semester. In the case of late registering students the plan is in effect beginning the day following payment of fees.
- During the summer session, a student is considered registered and eligible for the plan if tuition and fees have been paid from the first class day of the summer session up to the first class day of the fall semester. Students who pay their summer session after the first class day are eligible for the plan the day after the fee has been paid.
- If you withdraw from school but have accessed this health care plan prior to your withdrawal, you will forfeit your Medical Service fee.
- You may continue to see the same physician if you become ineligible for the Medical Service Plan. Should you choose to do so, only the method of payment will change. The doctor-patient relationship need not change because of your status as a non-student.
- These clinics observe a non-discriminatory policy. Students will be cared for in a timely and professional manner. Services are provided with the same courtesy, professionalism, and quality received by all patients. Additionally, patients shall not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual preference, national origin, health status, income, handicap or status as students.
Questions regarding the Plan administration and benefits may be directed to the Office of Vice President for Student Services at 552-2600. Questions regarding medical necessity or other clinical concerns must be directed to a physician.
Additional Health Insurance Option
Personal health coverage is the responsibility of each individual student. Students are encouraged to carry health and accident insurance. The University of Texas System Health Insurance is a comprehensive insurance plan designed to cover hospitalization and treatment for more serious health problems. For students interested in purchasing this additional health coverage, the insurance policy information is available at www.studentresources.net, under the U.T. Permian Basin section. Hard copies of this information are no longer provided.

If it is necessary to have a film reviewed by a radiologist, his fee may not be covered. Advanced radiology services such as fluoroscopy, sonography, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging and CT scanning are not covered.
Prescription Benefits – This plan does not cover prescriptions. Students who have prescription benefits under another health plan should inform their health care professional during their visit. This may increase the range of medications he can prescribe economically.
