About the University

Authorized by the Texas Legislature in 1969 as an upper level university offering junior, senior, and graduate level programs, UT Permian Basin achieved four-year status and began offering freshman level classes in September of 1991. The University of Texas of the Permian Basin is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

  • Bachelor of Arts degrees are offered in Art, Child and Family Studies, Communication, Criminology, Economics, English, History, Humanities, Leadership Studies, Multidisciplinary Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Spanish.
  • Bachelor of Business Administration degrees are offered in Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing.
  • Bachelor of Science degrees are offered in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Geology, Industrial Technology, Information Systems, Kinesiology and Mathematics.

GRADUATE STUDIES

STUDENT RESOURCES

  • Counseling Center provides psychological services for the community and students.
  • Financial Aid is available in the form of grants, scholarships, college work-study, work assistance, veterans education benefits, agency assistance, and a variety of loans.
  • Library The J. Conrad Dunagan Library is a blend of traditional resources and new technology, pursing a vision of becoming the learning nexus for the university community by promoting information literacy, offering innovative services and fostering lifelong learning behaviors.
    There is a core print collection of more than 600 of the most widely used academic journals, with another 25,000 journals available full-text by means of online electronic data bases.  The library holds 284,000 bound volumes, with another 625,000 titles available on microforms.  
  • Literacy Center* works with students to improve their abilities to read, comprehend, and use textbooks and other course related materials.
  • Math and Science Center provides tutoring for students in math and general education science classes. It also helps students gain an understanding of math methods used in any class.
  • PASS (Programs Assisting Student Study) offers a wide range of support services including: academic and career counseling, career placement, study skills support, microcomputers for word processing, and special testing services.
  • REACH (Regional Electronic Academic Communication Highway) is a unique collaboration developed among community colleges, area public schools and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.  This partnership provides students from grade school to graduate school the most advanced, efficient learning technologies available.
  • Student Activities include a wide range of campus cultural and entertainment events. Students, through the Student Senate, are represented on the Program Board (campus entertainment, lectures, fine arts exhibits, folk culture events).
  • Student Union a place close to classes where students can play pool, video games, hold meetings, and just relax. The Student Union is the center of student life on campus.
  • Writing Center assists students with writing assignments in all classes through tutoring and one-on-one mentoring.

HOUSING AND FOOD SERVICE

  • On Campus: completely furnished, all electric efficiency, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and four bedroom apartment-style living. Housing for families is also available. All apartments have high speed internet connections.
  • Off-Campus: wide range of rental apartments available at reasonable prices within walking distance from the campus.
  • On Campus food service available Monday through Friday.

COMPUTER AND TELECOM SERVICES

  • Every UTPB classroom is equipped with multimedia capabilities.
  • Wi-Fi is available in all classrooms, the Library, Student Union, and other public access areas.
  • Four general purpose multimedia computer labs are available to students.
  • Interactive video with national and international connectivity making available courses, seminars and presentations to students.
  • Campus-wide computer network connects every classroom and office to both local and wide area networks.

OTHER RESOURCES

  • The Bush Family Home, Ellen Noel Art Museum, and Presidential Museum are located on the south campus.
  • UT Permian Basin Park is a park with baseball batting cages, soccer fields, softball fields, and playground equipment operated by the City of Odessa. It is located on the northeast corner of the campus.
