Tryout Purpose
The main purpose of the tryout process is to select the best overall individuals for the University of Texas at the Permian Basin Cheerleading Team. When choosing squad members we are looking for individuals who demonstrate proper cheerleading technical skills, vocal projection, reliable attendance, excellent athletic abilities, academic commitment and spirit in accordance with the tryout score scale. Generally some individuals will be ready and prepared to contribute to the program immediately while other individuals may not be the most experienced at this time, but show the potential to contribute to the program with hard work, commitment and guidance.
Tryout Clinic:

All events will be held at Alpha Cheer & Dance Co. *1600 Idlewilde * Midland, Texas 79703
Athletes are encouraged to attend the free monthly open gyms that are held to become familiar with any of the required skills. The opportunities offer a low-stress environment that allows you to learn and polish current techniques during a regular practice prior to the actual tryout date. Tryouts are not the time to learn new skills.
Open Gym: Sunday, February 3rd 3-5 pm & Sunday, March 2nd 3-5 pm

Scholarships
UTPB will be awarding ten scholarships with registration pending. Top 3 scores will receive scholarships in the amount of $2000.00 per year. 4th – 7th placements will receive $1600.00 per year. 8th – 10th placements will receive $1200.00 per year. Scholarship recipients must maintain a 2.5 annual GPA.
Other Methods of Auditions
All those interested in trying out for the UTPB Cheer Squad are encouraged to tryout in person at the yearly campus tryout dates. However, those who are unable to attend tryouts on those dates may set up an appointment for a private audition.
What to Wear
Men-Black shorts with white t-shirt. White tennis shoes.
Ladies- Black cheer shorts or hot pants with black or white sports bra or racer back tank top with support*. White cheer shoes. Hair pulled back in secure ponytail. Absolutely no jewelry or fake nails. *Note: If shorts are loose, please wear bloomers/boy cut shorts underneath.

20-30 athletes will be selected to the team.
Alternates may also be selected.
*Although we strongly recommend that athletes can meet these requirements, we also look for potential that we can develop. Previous cheerleading and gymnastics experience is not required.
Required Activity for
Cheerleaders and Mascots
Attendance at all practices and official events is required. In addition to practices noted above, participation in the following activities at minimum is required:
o 13-15 basketball dates - Create posters for the events
o 13-15 volleyball dates - Create posters for events
o All Playoff performances if playoffs are hosted
From time to time, the university will have special activities in which the cheer squad is supposed to participate.
The cheerleading squad and mascot will serve the University to promote spirit on the UTPB campus and University awareness throughout the Permian Basin . |
