Meet Derek Catsam! Derek is a history professor at UTPB. His work on race and politics in the U.S. and
Africa, terrorism and sports gives him the opportunity to live, work and travel all around the world. This past summer he went to China, South Africa and
England. He has written a book on the 2004 Boston Red Sox and is at work on books on civil rights in the U.S. and
South Africa and global terrorism. |

| Rhina Toruño |

Meet Rhina Toruño-Haensly! This Spanish literature professor from El Salvador has two doctoral degrees, one in philosophy and the second one in Latin-American Literature. She teaches Spanish courses at UTPB. She holds a Kathlyn Cosper Dunagan Professorship in Humanities. Her fourth book, “Juan Felipe Toruño in Two Worlds: Critical Analysis of his Works,” was released Sept. 8. She is currently writing a book about Mexican American authors. Dr. Toruño loves to teach in West Texas. She is involved with the community through the Spanish Literary Club that she founded 10 years ago.

Meet Emilio Mutis-Duplat! In 33 years at UTPB, he has worked with more than 1,000 undergraduate students in geology. He is currently the department chair for science and mathematics. Emilio’s boots were made for walking, and he loves to be out in the field! His research interests include the geology of Mason County, Texas, and the geology of the
San Mateo
Mountains in
New Mexico. He regularly teaches mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic rocks, structural geology, mineral deposits and field geology. |

Meet Lanita Akins! Lanita teaches History 1301 and 1302 and is the coordinator of Freshman Seminar. She enjoys freshman students and continues to focus on their academic futures as well as their personal success. She loves sports and tries to attend all the Falcon events – including soccer at 55 degrees and 99 degrees in a four-day span. Baseball in a blanket and ear muffs, swimming when the water is warmer and basketball and volleyball where she injured her knee stomping on the bleachers. Old age is wonderful! |
