ExCET Eligibility
Texas State Board for Educator Certification regulations
apply to the Examination for the Certification of Educators
in Texas (ExCET). Under current regulations, candidates for
certification are first eligible to take the tests during
the last semester of their certification program, or anytime
thereafter. Being eligible includes receiving a bachelor's
degree, having a 2.75 GPA in education courses, having a 2.75
GPA in teaching fields, and having a cumulative 2.5 GPA by
the end of the last semester of the candidate's certification
program. When seeking certification through UT Permian Basin,
the candidate will need to obtain an official authorization
to test bar code label from the Certification Officer to affix
to the registration from authorizing the candidate to test.
All candidates seeking initial certification through UT Permian
Basin must attain a bench score on the appropriate diagnostic
test in order to be eligible to register for the relevant
ExCET test. Currently. ExCET diagnostic practice test are
available in the areas of Elementary Comprehensive, Elementary
Professional Development, Secondary Professional Development,
Early Childhood, Special Education, History and Mathematics.
Candidates who do not achieve the benchmark score on a diagnostic
test must complete a review session and may
be required to take additional coursework prior to taking
another diagnostic test in the same area. Such review programs
may be those provided by the University or other entities.
Diagnostic test are offered several times each year on a
schedule aligned with ExCET registration deadlines. Candidates
who do not achieve the benchmark score on the same diagnostic
test on two occasions will be referred to the Teacher Education
Council for formulation of an advisory plan.
