The Master of Arts in Special Education degree is designed to help candidates learn how to enrich the lives of students with developmental and learning disabilities. You'll examine the importance of cultural diversity, theories of behavior, human ontological development, classroom best practices, research design and current trends in special education programs and service. With our flexible online special education degree, you can balance the demands of going to school with work and family. 

Graduates with a degree in Special Education Program will gain preparation in disability awareness, instructional strategies, formal and informal assessment, and law. Candidates who complete the Generalist specialization are prepared to work in a special education Pre-Kindergarten–secondary private or public school setting.

Graduate Special Education Program Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 credit hours of coursework leading to the baccalaureate degree
  • Essay submitted and reviewed: “Why do you want to pursue a master’s degree in special education?”

Conditional Admission

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university - GPA below 3.0 – 2.5 in the last 60 credit hours of coursework leading to the baccalaureate degree
  • Essay submitted and reviewed: “Why do you want to pursue a master’s degree in special education?
  • OTHER EVIDENCE: At least one of the following:
    • Minimum GRE score of 282 (verbal and quantitative combined);
    • Statement related to the circumstances surrounding your lower GPA and why you believe you are ready for graduate studies (at least one page in length) AND two professional letters of recommendation, both should be from school administrators who have supervised your work in the classroom. If you can only secure one from such a person, the second must be a professional letter from someone who can speak to your capacity to be a special education teacher.

M.A. in Special Education Degree Requirements

  • Students must complete 33 semester credit hours of core coursework.
  • Students are required to complete 3 semester credit hours of generalist capstone coursework.
  • Students are required to complete 3 semester credit hours of research in education.
