A Message to the students from Dr. Becky Spurlock, Vice President for Student Affairs and Leadership

Dear Students,

I’m writing today with a big update.  The Chancellor of the UT System has shared some guidance with academic campuses to help us navigate this unique situation.  You can find the guidance here.

Chancellor Milliken shares some news I know you’ll be interested in. I am highlighting three bits of news below.

1) The commencement ceremony will be postponed.  Graduating students will receive their degrees as scheduled. We are working on a creative way to honor our graduates and planning a big celebration sometime in the future so family and friends will have a chance to celebrate with graduates.

2) We will be asking all campus residents to stay or return home to complete their courses, unless you don’t have a suitable alternative. Students who want to petition to remain on campus because they lack a suitable alternative will be given an opportunity to submit a request starting WednesdayMany of you will want additional details about the moving out process. Please expect a communication with these details Wednesday afternoon.  Until then, you do not have to begin moving out unless you are already ready to do so.

3) Students who have paid for residence halls and dining plans that they cannot use will be reimbursed or credited for unused portions. The UT System will be providing guidance to campuses on this issue. We will provide additional details about reimbursements or credits for housing and dining after we receive guidance from the UT System.  This may take several days or longer; please be patient with us as we work through the specifics of these issues.

I know you will have a lot of questions about all these topics. There will be more details from us soon.  We are working long hours to have answers to your questions and be ready to help you.

I know it all feels so uncertain. Many of you have written me in the last few days, and I’ve responded to each email quickly because I know how worried many of you are feeling.  As Falcons, our community already takes great care of one another, and I know we will continue to do so now and in the future.

Please stay tuned for additional details. Thank you for taking care of each other and know that we remain committed to you.

Falcons Up,

Dr. Spurlock
