October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. “Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an opportunity to redouble our commitment to ending interpersonal and sexual violence,” said Corey Benson, Dean of Students. “The programs offered over the next month are designed to increase awareness and educate our community on how to recognize and respond to potentially harmful situations.”
“With families confined in close spaces for long periods of time during the current pandemic, we can see that there is greater risk that tensions may result in domestic violence,” said Narita Holmes, Title IX Coordinator and Asst. Compliance Officer. “We are ready to assist our students through these difficult situations and help them find the resources, both internally and externally, that provide safe solutions that meet their needs. Educational opportunities to increase awareness will enhance our ability to succeed in this mission.”
UT Permian Basin partners with the Crisis Center of West Texas to offer prevention programming and support services to students. “Even though we’ve had to be more creative during this Domestic Violence Awareness Month, continuing to partner with UT Permian Basin to bring awareness of intimate partner violence to students on campus is more important than ever,” said Elizabeth Teixeira, Prevention Services Director for the Crisis Center of West Texas. “With increased social distancing, the risk for increased isolation is more real now. Through our partnership, we can ensure that services offered by the West Texas Crisis Center and can connect them to supportive advocates if need be.”

Bringing in the Bystander® is an evidence-based bystander intervention program. Rather than focusing strictly on the roles of perpetrator and victim, the highly interactive Bringing in the Bystander® curriculum uses a community responsibility approach. It teaches bystanders how to safely intervene in instances where sexual violence, relationship violence or stalking may be occurring or where there may be risk that it will occur.
The Bystander Intervention Peer Education Program will facilitate four Bringing in the Bystander trainings for students virtually in October:
October 19 3:00-4:30 PM
October 20 1:00-2:30 PM
October 21 10:00-11:30 AM
October 22 10:00-11:30 AM
