Joel Hope Leaning Against Pole in Courtyard on Campus
The University is going green for a week!

UT Permian Basin is going green! March 15-19 will mark the University’s first-ever Falcon Green Week. UTPB student Joel Hope said the goal is to educate the campus and community about how they can help our environment, and that’s when the idea Falcon Green Week came to life.

As a student at UTPB, I felt like there is a lot we can do to prevent environmental changes, but we aren’t always aware of it, said sophomore, Joel Hope.

Hope recognizes thnegative connotation that environmental campaigns can receive in West Texas, arguably the heart of the oil and gas industry. However, he said, there are small changes the community can make to help our environment in a big way.

When people think of environmental campaigns, they often think of the exclusion of oil, however, oil is one of the most important energy sources we have today, and it will be for a very long time. Therefore, Falcon Green Week will focus on small things that you and I can do in our everyday life to help the environment.

Some of the events planned for Falcon Green Week include a campus trash pick-up, vegetarian options for students to try in the dining hall, making terrariums, sessions that are dedicated to providing information on energy conservation and how to recycle better, and so much more! There will also be several prizes and giveaways - including two bikes!

The UTPB community already has multiple environmental events every year that help students increase awareness, but the idea behind Falcon Green Week is to gather all these events into one week because that will, hopefully,  have a much greater impact on our society and the way we think, said Hope.
