The University of Texas Permian Basin’s Shepperd Leadership Institute partnered with Midland ISD to provide leadership training to high schoolers on Monday.
The interactive, one-day leadership seminar was for juniors and seniors in MISD. It took place on the first day of MISD’s spring intersession on the Midland High School campus.
“This is a wonderful partnership with Midland ISD that we will continue to build upon, and an exciting first for the Shepperd Leadership Institute to participate in MISD intercession enrichment,” Kate Williamson, Executive Director of the Shepperd Leadership Institute, said. “We are honored to have the opportunity to provide leadership training to young West Texans in MISD and are looking forward to providing more training like this in the future.”
The training used the LeaderShape Catalyst Program, which focuses on: developing one’s authentic path, building relationships, and then committing to an actionable plan to be a catalyst for something extraordinary.
“Catalyst by LeaderShape is a nationally-recognized leadership curriculum,” Corey Benson, Dean of Students at UT Permian Basin, explained. “For more than three decades, LeaderShape has been creating transformational leadership development experiences for students across the country. Embedded within every LeaderShape program is the vision ‘to transform the world by increasing the number of people who lead with integrity and a healthy disregard for the impossible.’ The Catalyst program is built on the definition that leadership involves living in a state of possibility, committing to a vision, then developing relationships to move that vision into action, and doing it all with a sustained high-level of integrity.”
Kate Williamson, along with Dean Corey Benson, and Shelby Landgraf, Director of Community Engagement for the Shepperd Leadership Institute, served together as facilitators to lead the training.
“It was inspiring and invigorating to see these young students so engaged and excited about leadership,” Shelby Landgraf said. “Kate, Corey and I were grateful to help light a spark in the students – to expand their definition of leadership, to help them craft their own story, and to help them create a plan of action.”
