“There is never a dull moment,” Montes said. “Between teaching, research, service, my administrative duties, and mentoring students, the days go by fast.”
Meet UTPB Chemistry Department Chair and Associate Professor, Milka Montes!
Dr. Montes has been at UTPB for 12 years where she has taught General Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Instrumental Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, and Research Methods in STEM.
In 2022, she was given the Jim Olson Award, the highest award given to UTPB faculty for contributions to students and colleagues at UT Permian Basin.
As anyone can imagine, her days are busy.
“There is never a dull moment,” Montes said. “Between teaching, research, service, my administrative duties, and mentoring students, the days go by fast.”
Her dedication to student success can be seen through her involvement in the classroom, but also in extracurricular organizations.
Dr. Montes is an advisor for the UTPB Chemistry Club where she is involved with various outreach activities on and off campus. She also leads chemistry demonstrations in local schools and at STEAMfest.
She serves our community through her time spent on several local and national boards and clubs such as the Peer-Led Team Learning International Society (PLTLIS) Board, Texas Academy of Science (TAS), Permian Basin Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the NSF-ASPIRE Alliance.
She shared that she is proud to be a part of a team at UTPB that provides students with the best possible experiences and opportunities for their futures.
“I would encourage students to attend UTPB and enjoy the benefits of being in one of the largest University Systems in the United States. Our small class sizes provide the perfect opportunity to get individualized attention from the professors.”
Join us in sharing appreciation for Dr. Montes and her hard work for the University and the success of our students.
