UTPB Staff Senate is focused on promoting a sense of ownership and empowerment amongst staff.
“The goals of Staff Senate are to promote a positive, healthy, and supportive atmosphere for all UTPB employees and encourage professional development opportunities across campus,” said Staff Senate President, Mercedes Ojeda.
Staff Senate is believed to have been active at UTPB since about 1995. They often collaborate with groups on campus and community organizations to implement various initiatives.
“Without a network of staff voices across disciplines and departments, there can be no holistic progress on staff and employee needs. By actively involving staff in the institutional governance process, Staff Senate can ensure staff voices are heard, and perspectives taken into account,” said Ojeda.
The senate hosts a variety of events on campus; brainstorming ideas collectively based on feedback from different departments within the University. They also work to address any gaps and needs they are made aware of.
“For example, in May we organized a DXA bone density screening series, during which COHSHP faculty members provided this service to employees free of charge. We’ve also had opportunities to work with external partners, such as the Breast Center at Midland Memorial Hospital and the West Texas Food Bank this year,” said Ojeda.
Recently they’ve hosted events and initiatives including sweet treats and thank you notes during Administrative Professionals Day, a volunteer service initiative encouraging more Falcons to volunteer, a relaxation station of free snacks, drinks, and activities for students during finals week, and so much more!
“Collaboration is key to making the work we do impactful and meaningful!” said Ojeda.
The senate provides a platform for staff members to share information and recommendations with the president and executive council. They work hard to lead staff to more informed and inclusive decision making, benefiting the entire University.
