This marks Bedard’s first time presenting at TAHPERD, though she has experience as a presenter for other organizations.
Cate Bedard, Lecturer in the Department of Human Performance at The University of Texas Permian Basin, will be presenting at the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (TAHPERD) Annual Convention from December 4–6. The convention, which brings together educators and professionals from across Texas, provides a platform for sharing research, best practices, and innovative ideas in health and physical education.

Bedard headshotBedard, who has been a member of TAHPERD for three years, has steadily increased her involvement with the organization.

“The first year I attended the conference, and the next year I was able to bring students with me,” she shared. “It was at that time that I was elected to one of their committees. I serve as the Chair-Elect for the Professional Preparation committee. It was through that role that I was encouraged to submit a proposal to present.”

Her presentation, titled "Brainstorming Solutions for Additional Communication Options with Non-Native Speaking Students," addresses a critical need in physical education. Bedard explained that the idea stemmed from her work preparing future physical education teachers.

“The more time we spent in the schools, the clearer it became that even with the best lesson plan and preparation, if they can't communicate with their students, then it’s very hard for learning to occur,” she said.

The presentation reflects a collaborative effort involving UTPB students and faculty from the Ector County Independent School District (ECISD). Together, they explored practical solutions to bridge language barriers in the classroom.

“I’m happy to share our story and hopefully come back with even more ideas,” Bedard noted.

This marks Bedard’s first time presenting at TAHPERD, though she has experience as a presenter for the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (IAHPERD). She looks forward to the opportunity to engage with other professionals in the field.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity to be an active part of the organization. I look forward to networking and learning from professionals in our field from all over the state.”
