HSI STEM Project

The University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) has been awarded a grant from the Department of Education through the Hispanic Serving Institutions – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (HSI-STEM) program (PI Dr. Omar A. Beg (Baig) and Co-PI Dr. Rajalingam Dakshinamurthy). This HSI-STEM grant, worth $ 4.9 Million, will be utilized to increase the enrollment, retention rate, graduation rate, and career placement rate of Hispanic or students who qualify for financial aid (Pell-eligible students). The HSI-STEM grant started on October 1, 2022, and ends on September 30, 2026. It offers many avenues to assist students in their attainment of STEM-related baccalaureate degrees.

Opportunities For Students And Faculty

Financial aid to Pell-eligible students or other qualified students is disbursed through UTPB Financial Aid Office.
- Falcon Free: At UTPB, you can earn your degree for free! We believe that a college education is transformative and money shouldn’t hold you back. That’s why UTPB created the Falcon Free Program, a plan that covers the cost of tuition and mandatory fees for most students. The HSI-STEM Grant contributes over $200,000 to eligible Hispanic and Pell-Eligible students.
Paid internship opportunities are offered to the students.
Faculty Development program trained through ESCALA Educational Services and visiting lecturers.
Research Program for Undergraduates (RPU) aims to increase undergraduate research activities and enhance students’ skills. This includes financial support for faculty mentors, students, and project supplies.
Student Success Center: The grant supports the activities of the UTPB Students Success Center to impart supplemental instructions, tutoring, mentoring, and advising to the students.

Career Services hosted a fall Engineering Internship Fair. We had 24 Employer Partners (up 5 from 2022) on campus to recruit our Falcons. We are pleased to announce we have over 120 attendees join us.

National Science Foundation funding

The HSI-STEM Grant is pleased to announce one of our undergraduate researchers participating in the Research Program for Undergraduates (RPU) has received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Paid research internship

Participant Morgan Hernandez was accepted to a paid research internship (NSF REU) in marine biology at the Bermuda Institute Ocean Sciences for the fall 2023 semester.
