Black Velvet

Jarred Elrod

January 23, 2020 – February 19, 2020

Black Velvet is a collection of personal statements written and cultivated over a period of time spanning roughly five years. Elrod translates intangible experiences of contemporary American life into concrete, sharable pieces of visual language. Employing only one typeface and one color, he strips personal experience into its most potent, bare form. This collection of work is constantly in a state of flux and is not meant to be factual or definitive—rather, it is simply an indulgent snapshot of an open-ended, ongoing process.

Jarred Elrod is a Graphic Designer and Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Florida. Raised in a small Texas Panhandle town, Elrod received his BFA in Graphic Design from West Texas A&M University and his MFA in Graphic Design from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In addition to his experience teaching at the University of Florida, Arizona State University, and Texas Tech University, he recently partnered with Western Oregon University to complete a mini-term as Visiting Professor of Graphic Design at Gaungxi Arts Institute in Nanning, China.
