Many students who earn a Master‘s Degree in geology go on to work in the energy industry, if they aren’t already. The graduate program will broaden your background to pursue a career in any of the geoscience subdisciplines; exploration, well site operations, or field services. Graduates will be prepared to enter and succeed in the work force or pursue doctoral level training and research.

For more than two decades, we’ve had an excellent working relationship with petroleum companies in the Permian Basin,” Henderson explained. “These relationships provide students the opportunity to work on job-related thesis. Also, more than 300 cores have been donated to the Geological Core Research Repository at UT Permian Basin for research and teaching. 

It’s a very exciting time for Geology at UT Permian Basin! Recently, the department moved into its own building just south of the main campus. Renovations are currently underway on eight new labs and four classrooms. In addition to the building transformation, our faculty bring experience and expertise that can’t be matched.  

Our faculty has a range of experiences that bring together new technologies with more than 20 years of experience in the petroleum industry in the Permian Basin. Our faculty have worked on a variety of projects including the FutureGen Near Zero Emissions Coal Fired Power Plant ProjectDeep Well GeothermalCO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery in Residual Oil Zonesand Horizontal Well Depressuring of the Upper ROZ, said Henderson.
