Many students who earn a Master‘s Degree in geology go on to work in the energy industry, if they aren’t already. UTPB’s geology graduate program offers thesis and non-thesis options. Most full-time students complete their coursework in as little as two years. If you’re currently employed, don’t let that stop you! UT Permian Basin offers flexible schedules with graduate level courses in the evening - allowing students to attend classes after work hours.
“For more than two decades, we’ve had an excellent working relationship with petroleum companies in the Permian Basin,” Henderson explained. “These relationships provide students the opportunity to work on job-related thesis. Also, more than 300 cores have been donated to the Geological Core Research Repository at UT Permian Basin for research and teaching.”
It’s a very exciting time for Geology at UT Permian Basin! Recently, the department moved into its own building just south of the main campus. Renovations are currently underway on eight new labs and four classrooms. In addition to the building transformation, our faculty bring experience and expertise that can’t be matched.

Our faculty have worked on a variety of projects including the FutureGen Near Zero Emissions Coal Fired Power Plant Project; Deep Well Geothermal; CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery in Residual Oil Zones; and Horizontal Well Depressuring of the Upper ROZ,” said Henderson.
