An ILA recognition is a very prestigious honor. Many universities and college’s apply, but only a few are selected

The University of Texas Permian Basin’s College of Education is nationally recognized by the International Literacy Association (ILA).  According to the International Literacy Association website, this recognition “honors outstanding advanced licensure, certificate, or endorsement programs that prepare candidates for the role of reading specialist. The primary role of a reading specialist is instructional. Professionals in these roles predominantly work with students who experience difficulties with reading and writing in grades prek-12. Reading specialists must have the skills, knowledge, and disposition to work with teachers effectively and improve general classroom literacy instruction.”

ILA paid specific attention to how well our program aligns with the national reading specialist standards which are research and evidence based

An ILA recognition is a very prestigious honor. Many universities and college’s apply, but only a few are selected. The recognition shows that UTPB's literacy program is top-notch and adheres to a rigorous set of standards. It also shows that our students are well prepared and ready to meet the literacy challenges of today’s schools and to help all students become lifelong readers.

“We applied for this recognition by writing a very extensive self-study that was then evaluated by ILA. ILA paid specific attention to how well our program aligns with the national reading specialist standards which are research and evidence based,” said Assistant Professor of Literacy, Dr. Tara Wilson.

UTPB’s Literacy program was also recently re-accredited by Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

"Our hard work and dedication to the field of literacy and to our reading specialist candidates paid off. However, we are not done! There are two levels of recognition, and we are now striving for the 2nd level which is recognition with distinction," Wilson added.
