The NSF IRES 2024 Summer Cohort is embarking on its research adventure in Qingdao City, China. After a semester of rigorous preparation, this will mark the beginning of an incredible international research experience.
Following a competitive selection process, four exceptional students from various STEM fields have been chosen to participate in this prestigious program. This year’s cohort includes three students from UTPB and one from Fisk University in Tennessee.
Throughout the spring semester, the students engaged in biweekly seminars designed to prepare them for the research projects ahead. These sessions provided an in-depth introduction to the research topics, extensive literature reviews, and essential technical training. The students benefited from the expertise of their principal investigators and foreign research mentors. They are well-equipped for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Professors Spickermann and Badgett, shared their insights and perspectives on Chinese culture, helping the students understand the cultural nuances they will encounter. Additionally, Dean Richard Sax offered his thoughts on the significance of sending American college students to China, and the transformative nature of such experiences.
They are grateful to Dr. Dong, Heo, and Montes, for their unwavering dedication and guidance. Special thanks also go to Professors Jamali, Spickermann, and Badgett for their invaluable support. This program would not have been possible without the contributions of the dedicated administrative staff, including Christie Epler, Yvonne Drinkard, Jan Ongsico (accounting), and Timothy Pierce (post-award manager). Their efforts have been instrumental in the successful preparation of this trip.
