UTPB’s Chloee Suchy graduated this spring with a bachelor’s degree in social work. She plans to pursue her masters in social work at Columbia University!
“What attracted me to social work was the broad range of career opportunities, the focus on the person-in-environment perspective, and a holistic approach to mental health and well-being,” said Suchy.
Suchy says what sets social work apart is the direct pathway to licensure at the bachelor’s level, making hands-on learning that much more crucial. She describes her experience at UTPB as invaluable.
“The education I received prepared me with the knowledge and skills needed to become a competent social worker ready for real-world practice. The practicum component was essential to my experience as a social work student,” said Suchy.
Suchy is originally from Southern California but grew up in Midland. She says being accepted into an Ivy League was something she dreamt of but didn’t think was a real possibility.
“I now recognize it is a privilege that grants me the opportunity to receive a top-tier education so I can empower individuals and communities within the Permian Basin. I hope to apply the latest studies and research findings to enhance the mental health services available in our growing community,” said Suchy.
Suchy is eager to learn from top professionals in the field and collaborate with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. She looks forward to taking advantage of research opportunities to further her education.
She believes her time at UTPB prepared her for this next step, thanks to the faculty that cultivated a supportive and empowering learning environment.
“I was continuously challenged to push my boundaries both academically and professionally by Dr. Samuel Terrazas and Samantha Perales. The interactive lectures, mutual peer support, and hands-on practicum experience really gave me the confidence and skills to excel in graduate-level studies and professional practice,” said Suchy.
