Nursing student in sim lab
The College of Health Sciences and Human Performance will house several different departments, a school, and a center

The University of Texas Permian Basin has been approved by The UT System Board of Regents to create a new college: The College of Health Sciences and Human Performance. The College will house several different departments, a school, and a center:

  • School of Nursing
  • Department of Kinesiology
  • Department of Athletic Training
  • Department of Social Work
  • Department of Community and Family Health
  • Simulation and learning resource center and clinical labs

“This innovative re-organization will leverage multi-disciplinary faculty, talent, and student experiences to elevate our work and maximize the assets in our wonderful new state-of-the-art facility,” said UT Permian Basin President, Dr. Sandra Woodley. “It is really exciting to modernize our approach to community health in a way that targets the needs of our region.”

Dr. Donna Beuk, the current Dean of Nursing, will now be the Dean of The College of Health Sciences and Human Performance. Beuk said this new alignment allows students to learn and work across several disciplines.

“It’s very exciting to see students and faculty from each of these academic programs come together and to start envisioning what we can do moving forward. This is just the beginning. Our faculty will have more research opportunities, our students will have additional educational resources, and our community as a whole will benefit as well.”

The Departments of Kinesiology, Athletic Training, and Social Work were previously housed in the College of Arts and Sciences. Nursing along with the Department of Community and Family Health were under the College of Nursing. With the transition, students will learn how different healthcare fields work together in real-world settings.

The College will be primarily housed in the new D. Kirk Edwards Family Human Performance Center with several new clinical labs that will support state-of-the-art learning. The School of Nursing along with the Simulation and Resource Center will remain in the Mesa Building.

The transition is already underway. This fall, students who have completed their coursework in one of the fields of study will graduate with a diploma from The College of Health Sciences and Human Performance.
