The yearly event took place in Austin, Texas.

This year, two UTPB College of Business students were among those selected to take part in The University of Texas/Texas A&M Investment Management Company’s (UTIMCO) inaugural Scholars Program.

Finance major Manuel Padilla and Information Systems major Anthony Jenkins had the opportunity to meet Scholars from other institutions and network with industry professionals. Through this cohort, these students participated in the vigorous summer program designed to enhance their professional skills and develop a clear understanding of the investment management industry.

This summer-long program is for first-generation students from underrepresented demographic groups and helps them interested in a career in finance prepare to be successful long-term. Students learn personal and professional development skills, key financial objectives, and networking opportunities. Upon completion, students will have an opportunity for paid finance internship in the summer. Additionally, UTIMCO also hires interns from the cohort and helps place others with their external partners.

Every year, students are selected from each of the University of Texas and Texas A&M campuses to join the UTIMCO Scholars program. Eligibility criteria includes rising sophomores and juniors who are Pell Grant recipients (or first-generation college students). Scholars are chosen for their curiosity, discipline, strong work ethic, and for having a high level of interest in asset management. The UTIMCO Scholars program has the main goal to make the financial sector more accessible to driven students and to increase diversity of investment professionals in the asset management industry. This opportunity also grants these students access and exposure to top global firms such as JP Morgan, Bridgewater, PIMCO, Greystar, and many more. It also educates scholars so they can explore career paths in the financial and investment community.
