Campus Transformation
We are excited to share the latest develoments and renovations happening across the UTPB campus. These projects are designed to enhance the student experience, foster innovation, and create a vibrant academic environment. Learn about our ongoing efforts to transform UTPB into a modern, dynamic space that supports your educational journey.
Center for Energy and Economic Diversification (CEED)
UTPB’s CEED building, recently renovated, now offers 30,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space for workforce development, research, and innovation. It includes leasable offices, a co-working suite, wet lab space, a makerspace, conference/event space, and a full-service cafe. This facility supports startups and local industry collaborations, driving economic growth in the Permian Basin. Community memberships in the makerspace are available, providing resources for anyone interested in entrepreneurship or creative projects. The CEED is a vibrant hub for events, research, and industry partnerships, enriching both UTPB and the local community.
Construction on the quad will begin in summer 2024
The big grassy knoll in the center of campus, more commonly known as the “quad,” will soon receive a facelift of its own.
The quad first started to come to life in the early 2000’s after the library was constructed. The big grass field used to be where commencement ceremonies would take place on campus. Over the years, student life activities have been held on the field as well as other campus events.
Now, as we look to the future the quad will soon be transformed into a place where UTPB students, faculty, staff, and our community can enjoy our campus. The renovations include a large performance space, a bar-b-que /games area with a catering kitchen, native plants and landscaping, and plenty of spaces to six, relax, study, gather, and have fun.
One section of The quad will turn into Fiona’s Court. Our new Falcon statue (Fiona) will be displayed there to oversee the happenings. The large metal sculpture has an astonishing 14-foot wingspan that captures the spirit of our newest Falcon mascot, Fiona. The sculpture is made of stainless steel with textures of slash pine and silver birch for the body and wings and a ‘corn on the cob’ texture for her feet. Fiona will have her own space on campus overlooking what we will call Fiona’s Court.
The artist and UTPB alumna, Katherine Taylor created the remarkable sculpture that will be displayed on our campus. Taylor splits her time between Texas, the Adirondack Mountains, and northern Spain where her foundry, Alfa Arte, is located. Fiona Falcon was born in the studio pictured above but she is already complete and awaiting to be unveiled.
Mesa Renovations
The Mesa Building is truly the heart of UTPB. It may be the oldest academic building, but it still serves thousands of students each year.
After 50 years of service, the Mesa is set to undergo its biggest improvement project yet. The University was recently awarded $47M from state legislators to completely renovate the building. The project, which is expected to take about 2 years to complete, will transform the building into a modern, innovative space.
Phase I will began in April 2024 and will completely overhaul the first floor to create a more engaging and welcoming experience for prospective and current students. A “one-stop-shop” with admissions, financial aid, registrar, student accounts, advising, and more - all in one location.
Many more plans are in the works for the Mesa, and we can’t wait to share them with you. All classrooms and faculty offices will also be renovated!
