Sedimentary Organic Matter Analysis

The Sedimentary Organic Matter research group at UT Permian Basin studies how organic matter accumulates, changes, and is distributed in sedimentary rocks over time. This research helps scientists interpret ancient environments and climates, identify biostratigraphic events, characterize hydrocarbon systems, and solve a variety of geological problems.

The group primarily uses palynology and palynofacies analysis in its research. To strengthen and validate its findings, researchers also use a variety of analytical techniques, including:

  • Rock-Eval Pyrolysis
  • X-ray Diffraction (XRD)
  • X-ray Fluorescence (XRF)
  • Vitrinite Reflectance
  • Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
  • Organic Petrology
