George Harris is the newest UTPB police officer, but he’s no stranger to campus. Officer Harris is also a UT Permian Basin alum. Harris said becoming a police officer is something he’s had his eyes set on since high school. He first took dual credit law enforcement classes at Odessa College and then finished his degree in Criminology at UT Permian Basin in May 2019.
“I wanted to become a police officer because I wanted to make a difference in my community and help others who are in need. I also like the fact that you never know what is going to happen on your shift which keeps me inspired and ready to take on challenges,” said George Harris, UTPB PD Officer.
My favorite thing about attending college at UT Permian Basin was the flexibility of the classes. There is a schedule fit for everyone.
Officer Harris said he enjoyed attending UT Permian Basin because of how easy it was to find a class schedule that worked for him and his unusual work hours. Before he officially became a police officer, Harris started out at UTPB PD as a public safety officer (more commonly known as a guard), and then moved into dispatch.
“My favorite thing about attending college at UT Permian Basin was the flexibility of the classes. There is a schedule fit for everyone which comes in handy when you are working night shifts. So many of the professors here are knowledgeable and helpful.”
COVID delayed Harris’ plans to attend the police academy, but he was finally able to start the 21-week training earlier this year.
“I attended the Permian Basin Law Enforcement Academy and was in class 107. My academy experience was pretty intense both mentally and physically but through all this, my classmates from different agencies made the academy enjoyable.”
Now Harris has moved up again and is officially an officer with UTPB PD, a place he said he’s proud to represent.
“I enjoy working for UTPB PD because of the people who work here. They are constantly trying to better themselves and others.”
Officer Harris plans to head back to the classroom to work on finishing his master’s in criminal justice from UTPB.
Congratulations on your success, Officer Harris and #FalconsUp!
