For nearly ten years when you turn the corner of Parkway and 42nd St in Odessa, it’s hard not to notice the 70-foot-long and about 13-foot-tall statue of a cowboy and five steers named The Stragglers.

It was sculpted by Terrell O'Brien of Fort Davis. The Stragglers tells the story of the beginning of the cattle industry in Texas as well as the life of the cowboy.

The Stragglers statue was commissioned by Odessa Arts. The West Texas tribute is a $400,000 sculpture, funded by philanthropy and a gift from The City of Odessa.

O’Brien and Stephen Dinse, Shidoni foundry manager of Tesuque, New Mexico, moved the bronze cowboy sculpture into place on Monday, July 28, 2014, in front of The University of Texas Permian Basin.

The Five steers were added during that week with the official unveiling happening in early August.
