“The hope is that we create a runway to connect the work going on in the classrooms and laboratories with the local industry,” Shedd said.
You’ve likely seen the big green Texas state exit sign along Highway 191 that reads ‘UT Permian Basin CEED’ while driving between Midland and Odessa. If you’ve never stopped to check it out, you are missing a hidden gem in the Permian Basin.
UTPB’s Center for Energy and Economic Diversification (CEED) building was built in 1989 and has served the community and the University in several ways over the years. Initially, the building was a professional development facility used for continuing education training for geology professionals and a center for research. The CEED was also home to engineering students before the engineering building opened next door in 2019.
The building recently underwent a renovation as part of the Workforce and Innovation for a Stronger Economy (WISE) initiative. Construction was completed early this year.
The CEED now has 30,000 square feet of workforce development, research, innovation, and commercialization space including leasable offices, a coworking suite, wet lab space, a makerspace, conference/event space, and a full-service cafe.
Brian Shedd, Executive Director of UTPB’s Office of Innovation and Commercialization, said the building is open and ready for use.
“The hope is that we create a runway to connect the work going on in the classrooms and laboratories with the local industry,” Shedd said. “We have the facilities to support startups and their growth. Community memberships are available in our makerspace, so it is available to anyone who would like to access it.”
The building has already been filled for various events including SBDC workshops, a UTPB student theatre performance, the Founders Blend, a senior art show, and the list goes on.
Whether you are searching for a place for a startup, research, industry collaboration, entrepreneurship, or the arts, the CEED is available!
