“Attending the Texas Academy of Science conference was such a rewarding experience for me, both academically and professionally. Winning first place in the Plant Biology category was a proud moment, one that reinforced my passion for plant biology and the impact of my work,” said junior biology student Atlanta Williams.

The 10 students presented research on a number of topics including, treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis, an in in-depth discussion of child engagement in space STEM, potential natural remedies for red blood cell protection, lies and deceptions of the traveling salesman, and more.

“Engaging in thoughtful discussions and exchanging ideas in such an intellectually driven environment not only strengthened my scientific network but also deepened my appreciation for collaboration in research,” said Williams.

Soaring Science was started in 2023 as the UTPB student chapter of the Texas Academy of Science. Students learn about finding research opportunities on campus, locally, nationally, and internationally.

“Students learn and participate in independent research which gives them valuable skills and experience in determining further academic and professional options,” said Soaring Science Faculty Advisor Irene Perry.

The organization also offers students opportunities to practice presentations with one another, assist with UTPB science events including STEAMfest and the Permian Basin Science and Engineering Fair, and present their research at local and regional conferences.

Soaring Science students have taken a number of field trips including to the Fort Worth Zoo, Dallas Aquarium, Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, and McDonald Observatory. Students are also notified of service opportunities in the area at local schools and non-profits.

“Falcons gain experience, connections and confidence in their personal, academic and professional journey,” said Perry.
