Two UTPB staff members are helping professionals advance in higher-education student affairs leadership.
Dr. Becky Spurlock, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and Corey Benson, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, co-authored a chapter in In the Middle: Leading as a Mid-Level Professional in Student Affairs.
Dr. Spurlock was invited to contribute because of her longstanding work with mid-level managers, especially on supervision. Early in the process, she invited Benson to join her as a co-author.
Their chapter, Principled Supervision: The Foundation for Successful Individual and Team Performance, examines mid-manager staffing on college campuses. It includes 10 key principles for supervision that provide practical guidance for skill development and relationship building.
“The mid-level leader is where the operational and tactical meet,” Dr. Spurlock said. “Neglecting the development and support of these professionals can limit an institution’s success. Supervision is one of the hardest roles any leader takes on, and there often isn’t enough teaching or support to do it well. This chapter aims to fill that gap.”
Congratulations to Dr. Spurlock and Benson on this project! Learn more about the book here.
