New data ranks UTPB among top universities for diversity

UT Permian Basin programs are proving to be some of the most diverse in the nation.

The most recent data from Diverse: Issues in Education shows that UT Permian Basin ranked 38th in the nation for producing Hispanic graduates in Accounting in 2015-2016 -- that’s a twelve-percent increase from the previous year.

The Dean of the College of Business Dr. Steven Beach says Hispanic students that graduated in Accounting in 2015-16 represented 56% of that class, ranking 9th in the country by that metric.

“This news comes as no surprise to the hard working faculty of the College of Business and the Accounting program,” Dr. Beach said. “Digging deeper into the data, I discovered that UTPB had more Hispanic graduates in Accounting than most of the really big schools in the state. Combined with our recent number 6 ranking for CPA Exam pass rates for Texas schools, we know that the College of Business is producing qualified graduates ready to contribute to the success of industry in the Permian Basin, or anywhere they choose to start their careers. “

A large number of Hispanic students also sought Master’s degrees. UTPB ranked #21 for Hispanic graduates in Master’s programs in 2015-16.

UT Permian Basin has been federally deemed a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), serving over 50% of minority students.

Dr. Sandra Garcia, the VP of Research and Dean of Graduate Studies says colleges and universities are actively promoting diversity through minority recruiting efforts that target Hispanic students.

“The trend is moving in the right direction, with more Hispanics earning college degrees than ever before,” she said.

Data for Native American graduates shows to be even more impressive. UT Permian Basin is the #20 producer of Native American graduates in Engineering.

“We are proud that UTPB serves students representative of its community with a quality education that allows them to pursue their biggest ambitions,” Dr. Beach said.
