The University of Texas Permian Basin publishes specified information on campus crime statistics and campus security policies, in compliance with the Federal Student Right to Know and Campus Security Act (P. Police Department
The Police Department's goal is to provide a safe learning environment allowing students, faculty, and staff to reach their full potential, thus supporting the mission of higher education.
The University Police Department is under the direction of the Chief of Police and has an authorized strength of eighteen commissioned police officers, four police guards, four full-time and four full-time dispatchers, Communications Supervisor, one clerk, and one administrative secretary.
The department's police officers are commissioned by The University of Texas System Board of Regents upon successful completion of their training at the U. T. System Police Academy, pursuant to the authority granted to the Board of Regents by Section 51.203, Texas Education Code.
The UTPB commissioned police officers are fully empowered to function as peace officers licensed by the State of Texas and are authorized to enforce all state laws in those counties wherein property is owned, leased or otherwise controlled by The University of Texas System.
Campus Security Policies
The University buildings are open between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. They are secured at all other times, including most holidays.
A student may gain access to the Mesa Building by registering at the Police Department from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday in the Police Department Lobby and leaving his/her student ID. A key may be checked out to a specific area if prior faculty approval has been given to the Police Department.
Outdoor lighting is provided in the parking lots, the campus streets and student housing.
Reporting Incidents
- To report an emergency on campus or a criminal incident, call (432) 552-2786. Your call will be answered at the Police Communication Center.
- Or, use the button above to report the crime to Crime Stoppers.
- Or, come to the Police Information Center which is located in the Mesa Building next to Accounting and Admissions.
- Or, you can report to any police officer or guard on patrol.
The Police Department has a police officer or guard on duty 24 hours a day, year-round. Dispatchers are also available by phone 24/7 by telephone on campus to answer your call.
The department will process information pertaining to the reported incident or offense as it is received. A response or investigation is conducted in a timely manner. Response(s) include but are not limited to.
- Immediate response to emergencies through dispatch of one or more officers.
- Arrest and filing of charges depending on the circumstances of the incident.
- Referring alleged offenders to appropriate campus authority, such as Dean of Students.
If not on university property, the law enforcement agency having jurisdiction will be notified and given the information.
The University of Texas Permian Basin Police Department maintains a solid working relationship with the City of Odessa Police Department as well as local, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
Alcohol and Drug Policies
The Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System (Subsection 3.21 Chapter VI, Part One) provides for disciplinary action against any student who engages in conduct that is prohibited by federal, state or local law.
The University will impose a minimum disciplinary penalty of suspension for a specified period of time or suspension of rights and privileges, or both, for conduct related to the use, possession or distribution of drugs that are prohibited by federal, state or local law. Use on the university premises by an employee, is defined as misconduct by The University of Texas System's, Policies and Procedures for Discipline and Dismissal of Employees and U. T. Permian Basin Staff Employees Guide (XI.055) in the Personnel Office.
