UTPB- A Tobacco Free Campus

The University of Texas Permian Basin is interested in the health and well-being of all students, faculty, staff and visitors. Effective August 15, 2016, UTPB became a tobacco-free campus. Use of all forms of tobacco, including smokeless and electronic nicotine delivery devices such as e-cigarettes and vape pens, will be prohibited from campus.

It is the policy of The University of Texas of the Permian Basin to promote the health, well‐being and safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors while on campus.  Tobacco use and second-hand smoke have been identified by the Surgeon General to be the cause of preventable diseases. 

Use of cigarettes and other tobacco products lead to disease and death In addition to causing direct health hazards, smoking and smokeless tobacco use contribute to institutional costs including fire damage, cleaning and maintenance costs and costs associated with employee and student absenteeism, health care and medical insurance.

Facts About Tobacco on Campus

• It can take more than 10 years for a cigarette butt to decompose.
• A freshman in Class of 2029 could walk over the remnants of a cigarette butt dropped today.
• Cigarette-related incidents are a top-five cause of campus fires nationwide.
