The University of Texas Permian Basin recently honored its dedicated faculty and staff at the annual Faculty & Staff Awards ceremony. This special event recognized individuals who have gone above and beyond in their roles, contributing to student success, research excellence, University service, and community impact.

From outstanding educators and researchers to staff members who embody the University’s core values, the awards celebrated the hard work and dedication that make UTPB a thriving academic community. Each award winner was recognized for their exceptional contributions, innovation, and commitment to shaping the future of the University and its students.

Below is a list of this year’s award winners and their achievements.

Faculty Awards:

President’s Teaching Award

Winner: Dr. Katelin Barron, Department of Marketing, College of Business
Description: Recognizes outstanding and sustained excellence in instruction. Dr. Barron is celebrated for her innovative teaching methods, student engagement, and commitment to continuously improving her teaching.

President’s Research Award

Winner: Dr. Imane Hijal-Moghrabi, Department of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Humanities
Description: Honors faculty members who demonstrate a strong commitment to research. Dr. Hijal-Moghrabi has made significant contributions to public administration research, publishing multiple papers and winning awards for her scholarly work.

President’s Service Award

Winner: Shelly Landreth, Department of Teaching & Learning, College of Education
Description: Awarded for significant contributions to University service. Shelly has led numerous community literacy projects, contributed to educator preparation programs, and engaged in various University committees.

President’s Student Success Award

Winner: Rod Uzat, Department of Counseling, Bilingual Education, and Educational Leadership, College of Education
Description: Recognizes faculty dedicated to student success. Rod has worked extensively with academic advising, retention, and certification processes, ensuring students navigate their education and career paths effectively.

Olson Award

Winner: Irene Perry, Department of Biology, College of Health Sciences
Description: Given to a faculty member exemplifying the highest standards of teaching and service. Irene has been instrumental in mentoring students, coordinating research initiatives, and engaging with the UTPB STEM Academy.

La Mancha Society Golden Windmill Award

Winner: Mortaza Zare, Department of Management Marketing, College of Business
Description: Recognizes intellectual contributions and supports continued scholarship with a research/travel grant.

Staff Awards:

Impact Award

Winner: Elsa Montalvo, Director of Purchasing
Description: Given for outstanding problem-solving, resourcefulness, and innovation. Elsa has streamlined procurement processes, ensuring compliance and efficiency.

Horizon Award

Winner: Mercedes Ojeda, Community and Family Health Assistant Program Director
Description: Recognizes volunteer efforts that enhance the community and University. Mercedes has led numerous volunteer initiatives, including work with the West Texas Food Bank and campus engagement activities.

Extra Mile Service Award

Winner: Lupe Barnett, Administrative Assistant
Description: Honors an individual who goes above and beyond in service. Lupe has excelled in student advising, providing invaluable guidance and support.

Enhancing the Student Experience Award

Winner: Amber Lucero, Director of Student Emergency & Accessibility Services
Description: Recognizes contributions that improve student life. Amber has assisted over 1,000 students, helping them navigate hardships and remain on track for graduation.

Rising Star Leadership Award

Winner: Eric Baker, Director of Community Engagement in Music and Visual Arts
Description: Celebrates leadership and commitment to University values. Eric has organized community events, strengthened partnerships, and supported student engagement through music and performances.

Employee of the Year

Winner: Abraham Franco, Digital Media Officer
Description: Awarded to an outstanding staff member who exemplifies all university values. Abe has made significant contributions through his work as Digital Media Officer, supporting University events and storytelling.
