Students at UTPB's Fall 2023 Commencement.
Working to meet the demands of today’s fast-moving media environment, UT Permian Basin is launching a new Digital Messaging and Media Certificate that equips students with real-world skills in writing, media strategy, and social media.
The University of Texas Permian Basin is launching a new Digital Messaging and Media Certificate through the College of Arts and Humanities Communication Department. Designed to meet the demands of today’s fast-moving media environment, the program equips students with practical, in-demand skills that translate directly into careers in digital marketing, public relations, content creation, and corporate communications.

This 12-credit-hour certificate blends strategic communication, media literacy, writing, and social media expertise. Students will complete four upper-level Communication courses: modern media in society, media writing, social media, and advertising strategies. Because these courses are already part of the Communication curriculum, the certificate fits seamlessly into existing degree plans and is stackable, allowing students to earn additional certificates while completing a major or minor.

“This certificate gives students practical tools to thrive in digital communication roles while strengthening their understanding of how media shapes our world,” said Dr. Christopher Morrow Dean of College of Arts and Humanities. “It’s an excellent opportunity for students to specialize without adding time to their degree.”

All courses within the certificate follow UT Permian Basin’s regular course rotation and are available in a mix of online and on-campus formats. This flexibility allows students to complete the program in a way that best fits their schedules.

UT Permian Basin’s Digital Messaging and Media Certificate offers a strong academic foundation paired with hands-on experience, modeled after top programs nationwide. It also prepares students to pursue additional industry-recognized credentials with confidence.

“We are committed to offering credit-bearing certificate programs that respond directly to the workforce needs of our region,” said Dr. Raj Dakshinamurthy, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. “This certificate equips students with practical, real-world skills and prepares them for opportunities in a rapidly growing field. Additionally, the credits earned through this program can be applied toward several standalone undergraduate degrees at no additional cost or additional time to students, ensuring they gain the skills needed to meet the workforce demands of our region.”

Students in UT Permian Basin’s Communication program develop essential skills in storytelling, media strategy, writing, and audience engagement—preparing them for a wide range of professional pathways. The program is offered in person, online, and as a minor, providing students with multiple options to tailor their education to their goals. Our dedicated Communication faculty brings deep industry experience, innovative teaching, and a strong commitment to student success, ensuring that every learner is guided, challenged, and supported throughout their academic journey.
