For most students, college is a family milestone: your Falcon is leaving the nest. But what if you soared too? For two students at The University of Texas Permian Basin, that’s exactly the case. This mother-daughter duo is taking on the college experience side by side.
Janice and Mady Campbell are both freshmen at UTPB, but they’re generations apart. Janice is the mom, and Mady is the daughter. They chose to attend UTPB because it’s convenient and close to home, giving them the perfect opportunity to start their futures together.
Mady is majoring in biology with dreams of becoming an EMT and maybe even a surgeon one day. Janice is studying business management, hoping to become an owner and operator, though she’s still working out the logistics. It’s never too late to decide what your future holds.
“Right now, I’m just trying to figure it out and decide what I want to be when I grow up,” Janice said.

Through the struggles and celebrations, they have the closest person to them to lean on. Things can get hectic, but UTPB has been the perfect place to navigate these new challenges together.
“They are very welcoming and encouraging to both of our needs,” they said.
Mady enjoys the atmosphere of college life, and Janice is thankful to be welcomed with open arms as a nontraditional student.
The Campbells are proud to share this experience. They cheer each other on, wave across campus, and motivate one another to keep going. One day, they’ll both cross the stage, though Mady might beat her mom by a year.
