The University of Texas Permian Basin is preparing students for future careers, with some Falcons landing jobs before graduation.

Panhapiseth Lim, a student pursuing a Master of Science in Computer Science, recently stepped into a new role as a Data Systems Engineer ahead of his December graduation.

“My role is to design and integrate custom artificial intelligence applications and models into the daily operations of the businesses I support,” Panhapiseth said. “That means building internal tools, automating workflows that have historically been run on paper or in spreadsheets, and deploying AI systems that eliminate inefficiency and improve how teams work.

Panhapiseth said he felt prepared to enter the workforce because of his experience at UTPB.

“The program gave me a strong technical foundation in software engineering, data systems, and applied AI,” he said. “Just as importantly, the professors pushed me to think critically and take ownership of the problems I worked on. The small class sizes meant I had meaningful conversations with faculty who genuinely cared about my future.”

Much of Panhapiseth’s work supports companies in the region, helping integrate AI into long-standing industry practices.

“The Permian Basin runs on industries that have done things the same way for decades, and AI has enormous potential to make those operations safer, faster and more accurate,” he said.

UTPB continues to expand opportunities in this rapidly evolving field. The university is developing an artificial intelligence track within its master’s in computer science program, set to launch in fall 2026.
